District land office Receivers were responsible for all financial transactions relating to the sale of public lands. In these volumes are recorded the monthly accounts the Receiver kept with the U.S. Land Office. In ledger form, the accounts list the debits of amounts deposited in banks and credits of monies received through public land sales, fees, and commissions. The credits are quite detailed summations listing the total number of acres of land sold and amounts received from public land sales; the amount received from sale of mineral lands; the amount of fees received by type (pre-emption declarations, homestead declarations, mining applications, homestead entries, military bounty land warrant locations, and agricultural college script locations); the amount of commission received; and the amount received from miscellaneous sources (making plats, reducing testimony, taking testimony and timber harvesting). The debits list the names of various banks where deposits were made. These records illustrate the financial responsibilities of district land office Receivers and provide an excellent summation of numbers of transactions, types of transactions and amounts received.
